The one big advantage 3DX has over real porn is Fantasy. Anything you can imagine is possible in 3DX. FantasyErotic aka Dionysos knows this firsthand, creating wonderful illustrations of Egyptian worlds, stunning elf girls, and sci-fi adventures. FantasyErotic lives up to his name, throwing in a touch of eroticism in his works. We were able to speak with him about his stuff and what fantasy means to him.
Tell us about yourself. Where did the name FantasyErotic come from? Where are you located at?
There is actually not a big story about the name FantasyErotic. It’s more a description what my stuff is about. I’ve chosen this name as it is easy to remember. Now I’m using Dionysos and FantasyErotic as my names. With FantasyErotic I’m mostly refering to my site, but I won’t change my existing user names.
In your definition, what is fantasy?
When I started in 3DX I wanted to images with elves and fairies and so on, simply classical fantasy themes with beautiful female beings. And a lot of sex of course. After a short while I wanted to do some “normal” pictures as well. So my definition for fantasy is that it can simply be anything. There can be these sexy godlike elves, there can be a female gladitor being fucked in the arena or there can be a sex orgy at a pool. It’s everything that I can imagine, but it’s always fantasy and not meant to be real. On my dA account I often get angry comments about my native american pictures and people say that this is discriminatory. I only answer them that all my pictures are fantasy!
Would you describe your work as porn or erotic art? Is there a difference between the two?
That’s difficult to answer. I’d say that I have both type of pictures. Some are clearly porn, but others are more erotic art. The difference for me is that erotic art has great lighning and you might not see everything. It’s more subtile and the viewer can imagine himself what the picture is about.
How do you see 3DX progressing in the near future?
I think that the models will become more and more realistic and it will get a lot easier to achieve realistic looking results.
Your art is well-renowned for it visual quality, was it a conscious decision on your part to try to achieve a high visual standard?
Yes, absolutely. And I don’t know anymore why, but I saw some pictures which were rendered with Luxrender and I was blown away by the quality. On the other hand I knew the stuff on renderotica for example. There are a lot of great pictures and awesome ideas, but the quality and the level of realism was not what I would have liked to see. So I decided to try it myself, did a lot of testing and learing and finally could make some good progress. I have some photographic background and know something about lightning in a photo studio when working with different flashes. That was a great help to get good results in 3DX.
CPU rendering, which is very common in 3DX, has come a long way to produce image that are near-realistic, yet the technology is still slow compared to GPU. Do you think that in a few years we’ll see a huge switch from render enthusiasts over to GPU or do you think CPU rendering will improve with speeds in comparison to GPU?
Oh yes, CPU rendering can really be slow. I have pictures which needed more than 24 hours to render. However if I would like to do it with GPU I’d need a graphic card with a lot of memory. And these are far to expensive (at least for me). I expect that the CPUs will be still getting faster during the next years so that the time for one image will be getting shorter.
Some of your first published releases was on the theme of rough sex. Do you personally find the theme appealing or is there another angle that you look at it from (like it was designed for fans in mind)?
I think that rough sex is quiet appealing to a certain degree, especially when it comes to BDSM. In my pictures the sex involved might sometimes not be so consensual. That would be a big big no-go in real life. But I can do it in my pictures as it is only fantasy ;-) However I have also some scenes which are only made as I thought that others might like it or because I wanted to try it. I often exaggerate things that I like in my pictures.
Who are your biggest inspirations?
I don’t have certain inspirations that I can name. I always spend some time browsing galleries on dA or other blogs. A lot of inspirations come from there. Others from my own fantasies, movies, music… the usual stuff.
Tell us the process that goes into your works of art. What are your tools of the trade?
I’m working with DAZ Studio and export the scene to Luxrender with the Reality Plugin. This plugin has really a great material editor to tweak the textures. When Luxrender has finished its work, I edit the picture in Photoshop to get the final result as I want it.
From beginning posing an image to viewing the finished render, what’s the longest amount of time you’ve spent creating a single image?
The first images in a series or for a comic are always the one which take the longest. I spend a lot of time for creating the models and choosing the right clothes and props for them. Then I often optimize the textures or create new ones in Photoshop. After that I do many test renders to see if looks good or if I have to tweak something. When the testrenders are good enough, I create the lightning for the scene, choose the POV and render again some tests again. After that I can finally start the rendering of the first picture. This whole process can easily take 2 or 3 days (if I would work on the picture all the time).
Are you a Poser, Daz3D or other user and why?
I’m using Daz3D as it is free. I didn’t want to buy Poser not knowing if I would really be able to create good stuff and if I would also like to do it after a while. Starting with Daz3D was no risk and now I know how to use it, so there is no reason to switch to Poser and learn it again.
What genital props do you work with/ recommend for both males/females?
Actually I don’t have a favorite pussy yet (sounds strange, hm?). I tried many and all of them have pros and cons (sounds even stranger, hm?). For males, I often use the Satanica’s Real Gens. They simply look very realistic and have a lot of options!
Do you have any advice you’d like to give to any aspiring artists?
It’s very helpful to learn at least the basics of composition and lightning from photography. And of course: Be creative!
What do you have coming up in the near future?
I’m currently rendering pictures for a new comic, one is done by about 50% and I have the ideas for third one. So, there’s a lot of stuff to come!
