Some of you may already be aware of Net Neutrality and others may not. So lets take a quick look at this important subject and see why we should all be concerned.
What Is Net Neutrality?
“The principle that Internet service providers should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favouring or blocking particular products or websites.”
For you and me this means that you can browse any site just as easily and quickly as any other. Up till now this has always been the case.
Why Is This Important?
If this changes your ISP (and on a larger scale Telecommunication companies) will act as gatekeepers to the internet deciding which websites load quickly, load slowly or don’t load at all. In a world without Net Neutrality the websites and services with the deepest pockets could pay for themselves to have speedy and secure access at the cost of everyone else. Effectively meaning these companies would control not only what you see online, but how much it costs for you to see it. A serious impingement on free speech and your rights don’t you think?
Where did my porn go???
Do you think Brazzers pockets are as deep as Amazons’, Netflix, or Googles? What about Affect3D? Ending net neutrality would stifle online innovation from startups due to the prohibitive costs of an online presence. Imagine a world without companies and websites created by a guy or girl with nothing except a computer and an idea like Facebook or even Affect3D, neither might not have been created without net neutrality.
What Can I Do?
You’re not alone as there are already many net neutrality advocate groups formed! You can voice your objections to this change by checking out this site. An online demonstration is planned for Sept. 10th (thats’ tommorrow) and you can get involved with as little as an email address.
