Once you get past the dickgirls, most of the 3DX content that comes into A3D is, well, pretty vanilla. We do have some great monster sex content, of course, and some creators do mix in the occasional fetish outfit or kink (e.g. humiliation, cuckoldry) but what we get is like, a fraction of what kink and BDSM entail.
Granted, kink is kind of uncommon throughout all porn, almost by definition. There are many fetishes — that is, a sexual fixation on a specific thing — but these are generally more about specific actions (anal, vore, facials) or kinds of pairings (age & race difference, homosexual, step-parents). What’s kink? It’s a non-normative layer added to one or numerous sex acts that shapes the experience into a unconventional sexual experience.
Power dynamics is one kink that does come into some porn a fair bit, but it’s overwhelmingly humiliation/objectification, powerlessness, or coercion. That’s some legitimate kink fodder… yet still pretty one-note more often than not.
Sadism and Masochism (beyond GETTING BIG DICKED) are largely absent, even though they make up a majority chunk of the kink scene. Bondage has some of the most dedicated enthusiasts and one of the largest groupings among the kink scene, and that’s barely present in mainstream porn beyond occasional wrist restraints.
But is more kink representation even justified? Maybe? Kink is kind of niche, but studies vary in what they report. Kinky perverts make up between 5% and 20% of people worldwide (unless you’re in the US, then the number apparently ~doubles) according to different metrics within studies, which is a rather large range to pin down. Splitting the difference as our wild guesstimate of the day, that’s only a little more common than 1 in 10 people.
Not exactly the largest audience to make porn for if you’re trying to make money.
So when it comes to 3DX, I get that a lot of creators wouldn’t be into making kink or BDSM content in the first place, let alone seeing it as a wise direction for financing their art or livelihoods. Buuut I don’t see kinky sets or stories on A3D even as often as 1 in 20.
At one point I thought, “well, maybe visual porn is much more amenable to fetish than kink.” Except I was wrong. Kink.com RAKES it in, and there are oodles of kinky-sexy webcomics exploring this subset of delicious perversion. Oglaf totally gets it (and is hilarious to boot), and the expanse of sexy comics goes on and on. So are there just not many BDSM fans creating 3DX? Or is A3D just a dickgirl bubble failing to attract 3DX kinksters?
Of course, 3DX has some particular hurdles compared to live action porn. We’ve discussed before that the workload for rendered images, let alone animation, is time-consuming. While you don’t need actors, camera equipment, or a crew, a great image set or animation still takes much longer to produce than a porn shoot. And taking it to an even higher level of quality required to convey kink would demand significantly more effort. Even though our favorite creators get more efficient as their skills sharpen, that hurdle remains.
3DX kink could easily require more time, too. Personality dynamics, story setup, and dialogue quality, all matter a lot more for nailing many areas of kink, add in character design (you know, beyond the tits and dick size) and it’s a handful. Plus, if you aren’t already familiar with or embedded in kink activities, that’s more time spent researching and getting some verisimilitude.
And then there’s assets. Premade assets shorten creation time in 3DX, but if you rely on them to create your scenes you’re also limited to what assets you can acquire. Surprise surprise, BDSM assets might be available, but not necessarily in the same quantity or quality as others.
But maybe this discussion is all for nought. If there’s no demand, then why should there be supply. And how much demand would be needed to make the effort worthwhile for our kink-friendly creators? That’s a hard question to answer. Any artists want to chime in? If this is something you’re into, drop a comment to make it known! And if you know some great kinky 3DX artists not currently represented on A3D, LINK PLZ.

March 1, 20193DZen art for this article. Nice 🙂

March 1, 2019The article mentions a “kind of pairing fetish” regarding race differences. Is it possible to experience this fetish in a way that does not promote racist sentiments?
“Power dynamics is one kink that does come into some porn a fair bit, but it’s overwhelmingly humiliation/objectification, powerlessness, or coercion.” I think this situation is a big concern for the way this community approaches healthy sexual attitudes. There is nothing wrong with power dynamics kinks in a consensual situation. However, there is a lot of porn that does not address consent at all, and that is a problem. I hope we in this community find ways to better incorporate ideas of consent into our porn as I believe it will help us grow.

March 1, 2019I’m not aware of any cogent arguments for race-difference fetishes being not racist. Elayn is on point.
As far as porn and consent – the entire industry of porn is still fairly ‘conservative’ when it comes to involving ‘healthy sexual attitudes’. There are some lovely areas where it does show up, but without more demand for it, the numbers for it are going to remain on the smaller side.
And even then, ahegao and related interests aren’t going to vanish.

March 1, 2019For your first question, I would have to say no. The interracial category is inherently racist, and always includes power dynamics and stereotyping. If the scene were representing characters who happened to be of differing ethnic backgrounds, without being loaded with the other trappings, there would be no need for an interracial category, it would just be vanilla sex, or whatever other fetish was being represented.

March 1, 2019I find it really strange that you vote for 3DX stuff that the Webshop of the platform where you publish the article would not even sell it as they are against that kind of kink like rape and other violent fantasies. All 3 example images are from 3DZen and only the associated Set of one of them is available on Affect3d store. Not much of a surprise that the artist stops creating that stuff if your sales platform bans that content…
Marie Fasolt
March 2, 2019This is not entirely accurate. Yes, there are restrictions on what can be sold in the Affect3D Store enforced by our payment processors, and we honor that, but the images above from 3DZen would all be allowed in our store as they are. Whether the entire collections could be featured in the store is another question I wouldn’t be able to tell you without reviewing them, but we actually have a fair bit of kink content like you describe, we just draw the line at excessively violent works. And again, those are not the only types of kink the author is talking about.

March 2, 2019Sorry Marie. The picture with the forced deepthroath pf the whipped girl is from 3DZens Shades of darkness pt 1 set. This is not available on Affect3d but on your competitors webpage. The Elven girl is from a 4 picture commission 3DZen posted on his Patreon page. I agree that it is not for sale anywhere but on pictures 2–4 the metal spike impales her until it protudes from the mouth of her bloodied dead body. It also is not my cup of tea (snuff, gore, vote,…) but I appreciate here more honesty sticking to the facts. Affect3d does not sell such stuff (if this is positive or negative everyone must decide for her/himself) so motivation to spend hours of work into something you can’t sell and in most forums not even show… I agree that you sell the Erin and Vikki pt 5 set where the pic with Mrs Nathalie is from.
Marie Fasolt
March 3, 2019As I said in my initial reply, I was basing what I said off the images posted here, and would need to see the entire collections to assess them. The Patreon commission would not qualify for an A3D release if it contains the gore you describe, but also because it would be too short if it’s only 4 images.
But that said again, your information is not entirely correct. What is and isn’t allowed on A3D is not the same as it was 7 or even 3 years ago, so while a work might have been rejected a few years ago and is not currently for sale on our site for that reason,, that doesn’t mean it isn’t allowed now. Standards change over time, and sets that were too hardcore for A3D at the beginning are quite run of the mill today. We do not have anyone on staff actively digging through every artist’s body of work looking for rejected content to resubmit, however, so it’s largely up to the artist to resubmit older work for reconsideration for us to review now.
Anael
March 3, 2019Vore/snuff are more fetish than kink. But, as noted, payment processors don’t allow that.
If any of the above images were part of submitted sets that didn’t involve processor-banned content, they’d be very welcome here. 😀

February 28, 2019Agreed on the blondie with the latex leggings. That set was one of the best 3dzen has done. And mainly due to that blondie there… but the other stuff with the spike up her pussy, and some other types of brutal kinks reminds me too much of snuff. Which I feel you need to be a psycho to enjoy…
Anael
February 28, 2019Lots of people enjoy pain, and the thrill of fear that comes from ‘managed’ threats. It’s a very different kind of experience than snuff or vore.
But that’s not really common in porn, animated and otherwise. There’s probably more vore, honestly, than highly kinky porn.
Kingsizednuts
March 3, 2019But that thrill comes from previous experiences. And the entire idea that forced these things through are so wrong I still call them psychotic. People should visit a shrink. But I suppose it is a pan societal problem in todays world.
Anael
March 3, 2019Uh… no. That’s a misguided view of how kink really works. Enjoying being tied up isn’t something to get ‘cured’ of by getting therapy.
IBT
February 28, 2019I’m going to argue that the problem is that to do kinks RIGHT you need to have DEPTH to what’s going on, in terms of continuity (if nothing else). Really keying in on kinks is more of a mental thing than just doing a single pinup and thinking “ooh la la” in response. Kinks can be done cheap and shallow (and quick), but then you disappoint the audience you’re aiming for, who will (of course) want more than what you’re giving them.
I guess the easiest way to think about it is that kinks are more … complicated … than vanilla, if you’re going to do the kinky stuff RIGHT. That means that kinks require extra effort to produce, relative to vanilla (as you cite), which means that doing them “costs more” on the production side of things (time, tools and tech manuals) than doing the “easier” vanilla-ish stuff that already has a known audience.
Although, to be perishingly fair, I’d argue that TheDude has a “glam kink” and HitmanX3Z has a thing for elves, so it’s not all vanilla fare here at A3D …
Anael
February 28, 2019I absolutely agree; kink requires more work, and that can make it less attractive to creators. If there’s less reward, well – there’s little reason to make more unless you’re an enthusiast.
Glam and Elf kinks? I think you mean fetishes. 😉
IBT
March 1, 2019Perhaps glam and elves are more of a fetish than a kink(y), but it really depends on how you approach or look at things. There isn’t a really hard boundary line between what’s a fetish and what’s a kink. At best, fetishes and kinks are merely different points along a continuum of possibilities that blend into each other, where the main difference is a matter of extremity. That way, “tame” is a fetish, but “extreme” becomes kinky. It really all depends on what turns you on, and why, and how much of it you need in order to feel turned on.
And trust me, having a “thing” for pointy ears (and doing things to and with them) CAN BE pretty darn kinky … especially if an elf is “vulnerable” to such stimulation … ^_~
Anael
March 1, 2019I provided a fairly succinct differentiation between kink and fetish in the article. While there can be some blended lines in how they each show up in porn, I think we can agree that tossing pointed ears onto a model is like putting handcuffs into a handful of stills for your set.
It satisfies the basic visual requirements… and fails to really capitalize on that desire, or engage with its depths.
Elayn Wilde
March 1, 2019I think you’re both right. It could be a kink, but the execution is often the icing without the cake. However, that’s fine too. I really like the aesthetic of BDSM, the costuming bit of it, but not really the practice. I love power disparity, but my taste for it is in more vanilla scenarios like academia, rather than being immobilized with restraints.
I would love to see more kink content here though, and I agree the main sticking point is the investment in baking the cake instead of picking one up at the market.
