Galaxy Pink has been a mainstay in 3DX, creating some of the most unique boy girl and futa titles with her Sexual Fantasy Kingdom series. But there’s a lot more to know about this artist, who’s been churning out works for the past several years. In a male dominated industry, Galaxy Pink stands out as one of the most recognizable female artists in 3DX. With her arrival to the Affect3D Store this Saturday, we thought we’d take the time to talk with Galaxy Pink about her works.
For those who are not familiar with GalaxyPink please introduce yourself and what you’re about, and where did the name come from?
Hi guys! I’m Jessica, also known as GalaxyPink! I’ve been making the 3D porn stuff for about seven years now, and though I’m mostly known for doing futanari (dickgirl) characters, my main thing has always been to include lots of variety for lots of different tastes.
Whew, my name is kind of a long story! My name GalaxyPink comes from a project I wanted to do a long time ago, one of my first game ideas, called “Futanari GAME Girlfriend” where this futanari girl wishes she could have a futanari girlfriend from one of her hentai games. So I came up with fictional games for her – “Agent H” a sexy futanari femme fatale spy character, a sci-fi game called “Pink Galaxy” with the sexual connotations of the English word “pink” in Japanese, and some fantasy thing I called “Sexual Fantasy Kingdom”. The FGG project was a too ambitious at the time, so I thought I’d start by making the other ones, beginning with “Sexual Fantasy Kingdom”, and I went with GalaxyPink as my company name, and it stuck.
Now people usually call me Galaxy. ^_^’
Tell us about your path as an artist. How did you get started and why did you choose to do erotic art?
My first job out of high school was doing traditional 2D art and animation for educational games for children…
I didn’t learn 3D at that time, but the principles of motion, composition, expression, and personality I learned then have always stuck with me. I always felt limited by the strict requirements, and let’s face it, games for kids are boring after a while. I wanted to make entertainment games, but that was a bit before Apps, so small-scale lone developer game projects weren’t common. I tried for years to develop smaller 3D games in the style of big blockbuster games that were out there, with no real success.
Then I saw that Dlsite.com was accepting hentai artwork from outside Japan for the first time. So, after kicking around a few ideas, I created my old, original version of Sexual Fantasy Kingdom volume 1. I made a little bit of money, had a few production problems, and got some mixed reviews, so I learned from my mistakes and made volume 2, to try just one more time and see if this was a possibility…
The original version of SFK2: Futanari Elves, became the bestseller of that year (2008), and suddenly I had a career! Unfortunately, none of my work has ever sold as well as that one, but at least I get to be a professional artist!
In general we see fewer female artists involved in 3DX. Do you think there is a reason for this? Do you do you think it’s any different for a woman in what is said to be a testosterone filled, male driven industry?
Sure. Porn in general tends ot be centered around hetero male sexuality and male fantasies, and representations of women in lots of porn aren’t necessarily something a lot of women can identify with. Generally also mainstream social mores don’t permit women to be interested in, or participate in porn. Mainstream society in general kind of tries to keep a tight rein on women’s sexuality. That said, there are lots of women making porn, as performers, artists, or producers, and there are a lot of women who are interested in porn too, because actual sexuality is far more diverse than mainstream ideas about what it’s supposed to be!
On the flip side. There is somewhat of a feminist view that porn objectifies women and is even degrading. You don’t appear to subscribe to this view. Where do you think this feminist notion comes from and how do your opinions differ, if at all?
Oh, porn often is degrading and objectifying, and not just to women. I agree, but I also don’t care very much because the internet is a porn buffet, and you can choose what you like and ignore what you don’t.
Sexual objectification is when a person’s mind, personality, tastes, and emotions are irrelevant, and they are just a thing to be fucked (which is perfectly valid in certain circumstances, especially as a fantasy). Porn stars are often interchangeable for that reason. Viewers might like different physical features of different porn stars, but it’s not usually who they are as a person “inside”, that matters. That’s objectification. I don’t think anyone can deny it’s pretty common in porn contexts.
However, a lot of anti-porn feminist criticism came from the conditions of female performers in porn movies at the time those criticisms were made (in the late 1970s and early 1980s), when performers were sometimes coerced and exploited. That criticism was valid at the time, but the live-action porn industry has come out of the shadows since then, and the situation for performers has improved – there are still workers’ rights issues in porn, but only as much as for any industry.
Now, mainstream academic feminism tends to be “Sex-Positive Feminism”, about how women can and should have bodily and sexual autonomy, and enjoy sex and sexuality in whatever ways they prefer, which can include watching or participating in porn if they want to. Lots of women in porn now are sex-positive feminists too, like Stoya who is one of my favorites – I’m sure she’s had plenty of brilliant things to say on this very topic.
As for my work, first, concerns about performers’ rights and safety are irrelevant in artwork. Second and more importantly, I don’t generally objectify my characters because to me sex is more about the interaction of personalities, than the interaction of body parts. So I think of my characters as whole people with personalities, and treat them as such. A lot of my fans find themselves caring about my characters, and have said over the years that my work is special, and different from a lot of what’s out there, because the characters I create are so expressive and full of life.
Let’s talk about your work. Most of your characters are Futanari or girls with dicks? Just fantasy or is there are real life attraction? Why does this genre interest you?
Well… I guess there is a real life attraction. I’ve always been interested in futanari artwork since I discovered that it existed (Hinemosunotari is still my favorite), and I’ve always been interested in transsexual women since I discovered they existed – though futanari and transsexuals are not at all the same! I guess nearly half the people I’ve dated have been trans women. Personally, I’m a lesbian because I’m only attracted to women, but that doesn’t mean I can’t find dicks pretty sexy too… I just only really find them attractive on girls!
I didn’t really start including futanari characters in my work just because it was my thing though. I did that because I saw that futanari was a popular fetish on DLsite, so I catered to the market. The fact that it’s also something I’m interested in is kind of incidental.
Futa, dick girls, she males or transsexuals? What term do you prefer and why?
Actually I usually say “futanari” and sometimes dickgirls in parentheses as a translation. “Futa” sounds a little too rough-around-the-edges for me. “Futanari” means “dual form” in Japanese, and it pretty much only refers to these fictional beings I include in my work.
Transsexuals on the other hand, are actual people, who are born with bodies associated with one gender, and minds associated with another. “Shemale” is almost always a derogatory or at best objectifying term for trans women, and I never use it. Being trans is a life of pain, confusion, and the risk of violence and discrimination for most of them, and I wouldn’t want to fetishize or make light of that situation. Some of my best friends, and lovers, have been trans, and they’re wonderful, interesting, brave, strong, beautiful people.
Let’s move on to some of your released titles. Your feature series is ‘Sexual Fantasy Kingdom’ which has proven very popular in the West as well as in Japan. I personally love the strong story line infused with a healthy amount of sex scenes involving one of my favorites: dick girls. Also the variation in scenes and of course animation captures a real fantasy feel with the unique subject of dick girls. Can you tell us very briefly about the back ground story of each of the 4 parts?
The Sexual Fantasy Kingdom series is set in a light-hearted fantasy world where sexual activities are a part of everyday life for most people. It’s a power source for magic, it’s a combat technique for warriors, it’s a normal healthy expression of intimacy for lovers of course, and well… the “Elf Milk” they sell at the tavern is not milk!
Each volume contains several different unconnected scenes, each with their own story and characters – and some of the characters cross-over and have expanded stories over mulitple volumes.
Volume 1 was my first, but I’ve recently updated it with all the best art techniques I currently know how to use. The theme of volume 1 is “Sex with Creatures”, as in… various fantasy beings. There’s an angel, a giant, a couple of futanari elves, a gang of orcs, a catgirl, and so on.
Volume 2 was updated a few years ago, and the theme is “Futanari Elves”, with every scene featuring futanari elf characters. That’s where I introduced some of my favorite characters, like the Magistrate humiliating a suspected “dark elf spy” in front of the court, the actual Dark Elf spy in the Princess’ chambers, and the bespectacled elf priestess and her holy knight girlfriend.
Volume 3 was originally meant as a Halloween release. It’s called “Black Magic”, and features darker, and pretty unique scenes with things like a witch and her catgirl familiar, some vampires (including a Gothic Lolita vampire who became pretty popular), futanari dark elves, the angel from volume 1 having mid-air sex with an angel of darkness, a translucent ghost girl, a dungeon scene, etc.
Volume 4 has a special theme… lots of human girls around the kingdom transform into futanari – that’s why I called it “Futanari Kingdom”. I never actually explained why that happened, but every girl who had been exposed to “elf milk” in any previous volume transformed – including everyone’s favorite red-headed adventuress, everyone’s favorite Gothic Lolita vampire, and the Magistrate. There’s also a little bonus scene where they are seen together, and my favorite part of that is the visible social hierarchy from the peasant, merchant, knight and court classes, and royalty.
Why do you think the Sexual Fantasy Kingdom series has gotten such a great response?
One thing is the variety. I always try to include lots of different types of characters, fetishes, and sexual activities, and the world has something like 40 or 50 characters and over 25 scenes so far.
The things I’ve heard the most about why people like my artwork are my attention to small details – I try to make every scene appear lived in, and there’s just as much detail in the backgrounds and situations as in the characters themselves – and the amount of personality and expression my characters have, like I said before. My work in animation for children, and also my study of cinematography (since I used to want to be a film-maker) taught me how to tell a story visually with as few words as possible, and I always try to tell an interesting story, based on staging, body language, and facial expressions.
I think people also appreciate the humor. Like I said, it’s usually a pretty light-hearted setting, and lots of scenes have some very funny moments. It’s sex, but it’s more than just sex.
Who would be your favorite character and why?
Some characters have emerged as “main characters” in the Kingdom of Sexual Fantasies, and I certainly like all of them quite a lot, but I think my favorite is the Magistrate. She’s a court official and she’s very pompous and severe, but she’s got a little bit of devilish playfulness that comes out in her methods of “interrogation”. Also, things usually go wrong for her, and it’s fun to burst the balloon of a character who thinks she’s so superior.
Your most recent release is Sexual Fantasy Kingdom vol. 1: Galaxy Edition. Tell us about the format, characters and story!
Like I said, volume 1 was my first creation in 2007, and I’ve gotten way better as an artist since then. So, I went back and redid the lighting and artwork for each scene, using my best current techniques, I recreated some scenes from scratch (where I was unhappy with certain character designs), and added little bits here and there to some of the other scenes.
Volume 1 introduces some of the long-running themes and characters that come back in other volumes, like the red-headed adventuress who always falls victim to gangs of creatures, the use of sex for magical power, the peasant girl who lives in the woods and has liasons with forest creatures, etc.
I called it the “Galaxy Edition”, like I did with my re-release of volume 2, because I included a bonus scene featuring me, GalaxyPink. The volume 2 bonus scene with me in it was a very popular scene, so I had to include another one.
You’ve created a character in your name? Was it the thrill of seeing your alter ego facing intense sexual encounters or what motivated your 3d version? How much of a likeness does she have to the real life you?
Actually, when I was working on re-releasing volume 2, I had recently scrapped an autobiographical project, so I thought about including myself anyway, but I didn’t know exactly how. I was talking about it with my real-life friend November, who is the best person to talk to when I need porn advice, and she suggested a “creator vs. creations” theme – so I made it a dream sequence where I enter into my own fantasy world as a futanari character, and get rather roughly passed around between different well-known characters. As I said, it was very popular.
The new one, SFK volume 1 Galaxy Edition has my friend November as well, we’re both in the scene! I’ve always done a piece of art for her birthday featuring a 3D version of her, so putting us together was natural. I redesigned us to be way more true-to-life this time though, and… honestly that was pretty embarrassing! But even so, because I tried to do the best artwork I possibly could, and because November and I have such great chemistry in life, it turned out to be the best scene I’ve created so far!
The next part in the series is ‘Sexual Fantasy Kingdom vol. 5: Sexual History’ which is what you currently working on. How does the story continue and what’s in store for us this time? What’s the most interesting feature about the title that you can reveal? Also when is it coming out?
This volume is the backstory. It goes into the past of many characters. In the past there was a war between the holy knights and the dark elves, the Magistrate was once a lowly court assistant who ran afoul of the Pirate Queen (originally from my “Sexual Fantasy Kingdom: Pirate Amnesty” project), the vampire girls weren’t always vampires, and the sorceress characters were once in magic school. It explains how they got to where they are.
One of the interesting features this time is that I’m releasing the scenes one by one, as standalone projects, as I complete them. So far only the vampire scene is available, but I’ll have the first adventure of the red-headed adventuress done sometime soon. Pre-ordering SFK5 on galaxypink.com or supporting me on Patreon can get you a subscription to get access to each scene, or they’ll be available for separate purchase. I’m excited to approach a product release in a new way, and also to give fans more regular content so they don’t have to wait for an entire compilation project to be done.
I’m also trying to include little bits of interactivity where I can, which is very new for me! The dark elf scene will allow the user to choose what group to focus on rather than cycling through camera angles for the whole scene. The tomb robber scene will allow the user to choose “futa on man” or not – since so many people have begged me for that, and so many people have begged me never to do it! The adventuress scene will allow the user to choose the flow of the scene and which villain will accost her first.
I’m not sure what else, but it’s still in development. I’m hoping to have one scene released every month or two, until the whole thing is done. If that model works well for me, I may continue it for my next volume.
What stands out about your work is the combination of cg with animation. An interesting formula that can add a good story to the proceedings and life to the fun parts 🙂 How did you come up with the concept and why? Will you continue to use it or are there other formats you are considering?
Because of the way I do animation, with such a high level of detail, it was never convenient for me to do entirely animated scenes – and really the only thing people need to see in motion is the sex. The easiest way to still include a lot of story and personality was to include a series of CG images (with sound and voice effects).
Tell us a bit about the tools you use and about your work flow. What’s involved in creating a single piece vs an entire title?
I use Daz|Studio 3 for scenes and animation, and Photoshop for art postwork. Then I compile everything in the free Ren’Py game engine, as software. First I design characters, and a setting with lighting, usually with a slightly vague idea of what kind of scene I want to create. Then I throw the characters into the scene, and see where that takes me.
After the 3D rendering is done, I do some postwork in Photoshop, including hand-painting all the “fluids”, and then I add the sound, music, and voice in Ren’Py. Usually an individual scene takes me a month or two, and most of my products contain about seven scenes or so, but real life breaks in pretty often so I’m lucky if I can release one title per year. That’s why I’m excited about releasing each scene for SFK5 individually! It’ll keep people from suffering through long waits with no updates, and I’ll always have something coming out.
Altogether, a scene is probably about 250-400 hours worth of work, so if I worked like a normal person it would be 6-10 weeks per scene… but when I’m deep into a scene I usually work from the time I wake up until I can’t stay awake anymore!
Which do you prefer V4, V5 or V6 and Daz or Poser and why?
Oh jeez… some of my characters are still based on Aiko 3! I just started using V4 recently. I still use Daz|Studio 3, so I can’t use V5, V6 or Genesis stuff. I’ve tried Daz 4 and the tools and layout are just too different – it took me seven years to get comfortable with Daz in versions 2 and 3, and I’m still learning new features and better ways to use it, so switching to their newer, totally overhauled version would be a setback. It’s a shame because I can’t really incorporate some of the newer features, so maybe it’ll be something I can do in the future. Daz is free, so there’s no reason not to try it. I tried Poser and again, it was just too different. I don’t have time to just drop my projects and spend time learning a new piece of software.
What’s been the inspiration to your work?
I don’t know! I’ve always been an artist, since I could hold a crayon, and I’ve always drawn secret little porn sketches as soon as I became a horny teenager. As an adult, it turned out to be the best way I could make enough money to be a solo artist on my own terms.
The Sexual Fantasy Kingdom series especially, has been a place where I can explore lots of different ideas and designs, and really push myself as an artist to always get better, so, even if it’s “just porn”, it’s been very fulfilling for me.
I read on your blog that you’re not too happy about your work being pirated. And you mention that the “try before you buy” philosophy doesn’t really work for you. Elaborate on your views.
I know a lot of my paying customers have started out by pirating my work, and that’s great that they decided to actually pay for something they like. But piracy is rarely “try before you buy”, it’s almost invariably “never buy”. If it was true that it was harmless “free advertising” or if “people who pirate it weren’t going to buy it anyway” then my sales wouldn’t drop like a stone as soon as my products appear on pirate sites, but that’s what happens.
I’ve seen the effects with every product, and the simple truth is that software piracy hurts my sales. So of course I’m not too happy about it. I’m not rich, artists rarely are, I’m actually very poor. I struggle to pay my bills, and my rent, I can only rarely afford to go visit my family, or even go out to the movies, or anything… so anything that hurts my sales affects me pretty sharply.
I also really love what I do, and I put a lot of love and attention into my work. Creating art is an emotional experience for me, and it’s one that takes hundreds of hours, so it hurts to see people thinking all that effort is worth absolutely nothing.
There’s nothing I can do about piracy, it’s not going anywhere. I hate to admit it but it’s possible that pay-to-download software like we’re doing is a business model on a slow decline. That’s part of why I recently decided to start a Patreon campaign, to raise some money from people who just love my work and want to show their support, to establish a community of fans to whom I can just give away my content. If that works out, maybe I’ll release more free content in the future, and just not worry about piracy.
Where can we find out more about you and where can viewers buy your work?
If you want to know more about me, check out my website. It’s kind of a blog, there’s an about section, and all my ten or so products are available there too! The comments sections are usually pretty active and I always reply, so I’ve gotten to use it as a forum for connecting with my fans.
All my work is available there, for various retail prices, and I’m also giving a lot of it away (possibly all of it) to Patrons who support my work through donations on my new Patreon page.
Let’s see, I have a lot of random artwork at http://galaxypink.deviantart.com (requires a free membership to view NSFW art), most of my products are also sold on DLsite.com and DMM.co.jp, some of my vampire-themed releases can be also be found at VampYou.com, and now of course volumes 1-4 of the Sexual Fantasy Kingdom series are available right here on Affect3D!
Any last words to the Affect3D audience?
Um… I’m sorry for talking so much! >_<
But I’m so glad to be here! There’s so much amazing and exciting 3D art being released on this site, I’m not even sure if my work measures up. But I’ve been around so long that one thing that’s really satisfying to me, is knowing that some of these 3D artists were actually inspired to get into 3D porn because of my work. The greatest thing in the world is to inspire someone! ^_^

April 28, 2015Good read GP and ty for good content. Dont know what we can do about piracy since there’s a faction on the internet that defends it rather religiously.Going to have to ponder this a while.

April 5, 2015Sorry! The site was down for a couple of days because of some server upgrades gone wrong (partly my fault, partly my web host’s fault). It’s up and running again now – though I’ll probably be ironing out the kinks for a few days.

July 21, 2014Way to go XD So I contacted miro about possibly sending some ideas to some artists, as you guys seem to be expanding, but I didn’t see anyway to contact you directly. I figured this was a good a way as any. You’ve got some great art work and I think you can bring my ideas to life. If you could please contact me via [email protected] I’d like to share my ideas with you and see if we can get something going. I have a well developed writing background so I’m sure we can hit it off. Thanks.

May 29, 2014It’s great hearing Galaxypink speak up on piracy cause it’s a problem that’s sadly not going away. Not to mention the 3Dx community doesn’t have the advantage like Hollywood of running out and fining people’s asses off. Hopefully by getting to know the artists better, people will understand THERE IS somebody putting endless hours to put out this stuff, on top of that already not making boatloads of cash doing it as is. Props for not getting deterred by piraters and sticking to what you love doing!
GalaxyPink
June 5, 2014Hollywood has been affected, but they still make billions of dollars. It’s a much bigger deal when it happens to small-time folks like us.
I’d say I get deterred occasionally, but… I have no other skills or job history after seven years ago, so I guess I’m stuck with the best job in the world! ^_^
