LoChrome's Chamber Elf Thread
For wet elf fans, the Chamber Elf gets a name, a new friend and a place to get wet.

This is my first image done in Modo starting with imported DS content. I'm getting used to the weird shader tree thing (give me nodes!) and should have smoothed some of the architecture curves. However, with the promise of fluids and other particle effects, I may stick with Modo for more of Ajishila's adventures.

RE: LoChrome's Chamber Elf Thread
I'm working on my cast and getting my ideas in order for the Chamber Elf's story. This is Zajain, an elf sent to spy on and assassinate the boatmen oppressing the elves. Unfortunately for her, she doesn't succeed and joins the ranks of elven slaves.

This take was rendered out in DAZ Studio. I'm going to make a dynamic chain for Zajain the Slave in Modo (bonus point for Modo: dynamic replicators to keep geometry and render costs down). However, that will take some time to learn, so this goes up first.

RE: LoChrome's Chamber Elf Thread
Here's the Modo version of Zajain:

Because I'm getting used to Modo's shader set up (which I think is the worst part of Modo), this took me a really long time to get right. But I could put the text into the image as geometry, so it produces shadows, and the chain is keyed to a spline for easy controls (no need for each segment to have a bone).

New character, Noqe (rhymes with gnocchi). Rendered in Modo with six skin maps. I need to stop the madness.

Spring feels forever far away, but Ajishila is here with a colorful pic

Mostly, this was an excuse to play with procedural textures.

Modo. Metal. Big ass type. Not so much big ass ass.

A shiny preview of the piece I'm working on.

Lochrome...I really enjoy the expressions and poses you've provided so far. Nothing fancy, I know, but there seems to be the ability to convey a story Smile
Is CROME spelt like that intentionally, in this last image?

Thanks Smile I've been trying to push myself to find new ways of doing things—looking for a more interesting angle, a new pose, and, especially, different ways to set the scene.

Re: Crome, well, call that a freudian slip.

Hi mate, for me the bump is too strong at this angle of reflectance. What is happening on her right arm with the reflection...it seems very strong.

RE: LoChrome's Chamber Elf Thread
Thanks. You're right about the bump. Not quite sure about the right arm, though. This was a bit of an annoyance to make—I was trying to get water drops, but neither a texturing or particle solution worked. Perhaps time to go back to the beginning with it.

Time for another elf image…and someplace in the elf rebellion story. Here, Zajain has been caught after attempting an assassination. Her captor doesn't think Zajain will be more fun dead…

RE: LoChrome's Chamber Elf Thread
Thanks. This was kind of a pain—way too many polys for my little writing-focused laptop, and getting the global illumination right was killing me.

But now for a scene of pure sweetness. Ithqazibi escapes and is reunited with her love.

I'm less sold on my skin tones than for almost anything I've done lately. Not quite sure what's missing, though. They shouldn't be all shiny, nor should SSS be too overt in the lighting, but the skin looks flat and boring.

RE: LoChrome's Chamber Elf Thread
Thanks, G. I'm not seeing a lack of bump—at that distance, I wouldn't expect to those details. But maybe I'm wrong. I need to look at some high-res photos. Fortunately, I have a few of naked women Tongue

Maybe it's a problem with the base textures. Looking at the feet, the tone is consistent even at the bottom of the feet and ankles, where skin becomes lighter and rougher. Or maybe it's the specular after all. I really like the skin I achieved for my original portrait with Ajishila, the one with the green polkadots. That was using much brighter lights, which seems to work better for my skin set up.

RE: LoChrome's Chamber Elf Thread
It could be a lack of contrast between your diffuse texture, and your diffuse material color. If they are too similar, that flat look will come right out.
I had that same problem in a few of my earlier renders.
That and your render settings themselves could also be a problem. I would reduce the gamma and reduce the global light.
Instead I would add another light that simply lights up the background and doesn't affect the characters. If you are using an unbiased renderer global lights are very intense on it. (In my experiences).

RE: LoChrome's Chamber Elf Thread
I'm not sure what you mean about diffuse texture v diffuse material color. Do you mean in the SSS channels? Modo doesn't use a diffuse color channel for the skin shader—it's based on skin properties, so it has close to a dozen channels controlling things like epidermis, surface oil, etc. It's pretty good at mimicking real skin, but hard to get the details right.
