I believe that technology can do better in the near future
Although there is a difference between 2d and 3D movies, in my opinion, 3D is not very effective in many movies.

RE: I believe that technology can do better in the near future
It depends on the quality of the animation team, textures, and render settings.
So far, 3D in movies tries too hard to not look real. For the stuff like the recent Marvel offerings, they're trying too hard to bring comic books to life, and are trying to retain that original style, especially with the posing and the movement of figures, rather than going for a more realistic and natural range of movement. For 3D Anime, they're getting their money's worth out of Nvidia Hairworks, and spending a ton of time and money on textures, lights, FX, and particles, but very little on writing and acting (see Gantz:0, the Final Fantasy movies, or pretty much anything made in Japan). Harlock was probably the best I've seen so far, but even that spent too much time on the cliché hair and longcoat in the wind stuff. The problem with 3D in movies is they want you to know it's 3D. They focus the camera on things that only other 3D animators will care about - close-ups of things you don't see close-ups of in live action because they're not integral to the story. In a 3D movie, the fact that it's 3D IS the story, and that's what needs to change. |
