In my previous MOTD post we discussed JPayne2016’s “Woods” piece, where I talked about the uncanny valley. Here we’re talking about an artist who embraces the 3D aspect, and does so wonderfully. Avoiding the uncanny valley isn’t just a matter of going ultra cartoony. As this picture demonstrates you can still use natural lighting and a realistic pose. But clearly this girl has some fantastic features that a real life woman would be hard pressed to carry around everywhere 😛 That’s the beauty of 3DX: it doesn’t have to be about replication of real life. Most artists achieve considerably greater success when it isn’t.
