Today’s MOTD comes from Affect3D Store regular Naama, and offers us a great opportunity to dissect another render and go over its details. As you can probably tell, we’re going to briefly talk about clothing as it pertains to a 3DX artist’s erotic arsenal. In this case, our starring lady is wearing rather much of it. So let’s dive in!
Simulated physics are always a challenge for any 3D artist. The areas where this problem most manifests itself are rotation points. In an earlier installment of my tutorial series, we talked about the difference between dynamic versus superconforming clothing. Dynamic clothing is a simulation feature in Daz Studio and Poser. Cloth is then calculated to drape in a natural looking way. With superconforming items, clothing piece attach themselves to the animation skeleton of the figure wearing them. The vast majority of clothing assets are superconforming.
What this results in is clothing behaving against its suggested weight. We can see that in this picture: Moreen’s shirt looks fine around the chest and shoulder area, where it plays along with gravity. But around the waist and hip area, there’s clearly something wonky going on. The same is true for her garterbelt. The straps bend along with her thighs, when they should try to find the straightest path to their fixtures on the stockings’ lace rim.
For new 3DX fans this might look like an artist’s shortcomings. So I actually wanna use this MOTD post to correct that perception. Many of my renders feature the same problems. It’s simply a drawback of superconforming clothing. Naama is not an artist who lacks for technical ability. The shaders are well-configured, the girls are neatly designed, the lighting is great. But you have to work within your means. For many of us it’s simply too much to cough up a yearly Maya subscription with a render engine. That would allow us to simulate all clothing realistically, and eliminate this issue.
