Well, this certainly wasn’t a post I ever wanted to write. Tumblr announced yesterday, in an oddly titled “better, more positive” post, that it will be summarily banning ALL adult content from its platform on December 17th.
“Today, we’re taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions).”
There are no clear delineations of what those exceptions will be within the post, but their help desk describes them as, “Examples of exceptions that are still permitted are exposed female-presenting nipples in connection with breastfeeding, birth or after-birth moments, and health-related situations, such as post-mastectomy or gender confirmation surgery. Written content such as erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, such as sculptures and illustrations, are also stuff that can be freely posted on Tumblr.”
That leaves hot and sexy stories free game, more or less, but 3DX content is now a complete no-go for us.
The new policy takes effect in two weeks, which is a few merciful hairs away from immediately, unless you’re one of the several content creators who have already been banned from the site.
So, starting on December 17th, adult content will no longer have a home on Tumblr. While they reassure in the post that you’ll be able to “preserve [your] content outside the community”, there is no explicit language on how long data will be preserved or remain accessible. Affect3D therefore recommends that you begin downloading and backing up all of your Tumblr content now.
Affect3D will be removing our content from the platform, but leave our account active to redirect users to our Twitter (which is Tumblr-friendly link, compared to our main site). We will also be working extra hours to get an alternative platform we’ve been working on available to artists and fans as soon as possible. We’ll post more updates on that when we’re ready. In the interim, artists and fans using Tumblr are encouraged to join the #3DX Discord and the Affect3D Discord for discussion and alternative options.
